Getting To & From
Amherst, Massachusetts
Four airports. Buses, trains, shuttles, and rideshares. Everything you need to get here and back, without the guesswork.
Guide sponsored by Inc413
Amherst sits in the heart of the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts, about 90 miles from Boston and 35 miles from the Connecticut border.
It is not the easiest place to reach if you are not already in New England, but there are more options than most visitors realize: and just as many ways to get back out. Here is a breakdown of every realistic way to get here and home again, organized by where you are flying in from.
Flying into Boston Logan International Airport
Logan is the most common entry point for people coming from outside the region. Once you land, you have several ways to make the roughly 90-mile journey west to Amherst.
Parking at Logan Airport
Logan offers several parking tiers. Terminal garages are the most convenient but carry a premium. Economy and off-site options save money if you are happy with a short shuttle ride.
Book ahead at massport.com or through aggregators like SpotHero for the best available rate.
per day ~1h 45m rental est.
Rent a Car at Logan

The most flexible option: you will have wheels waiting when you arrive in Amherst. Two main routes to choose from, each with different trade-offs.
The Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90 West)
Faster in normal conditions with rest plazas for gas, food, and bathrooms on the highway. Holiday weekends can be a parking lot when Boston empties out or fills back up. A breakdown with no real alternative can add serious time.
Route 2, The Mohawk Trail
Quieter, no tolls, no big trucks. Single-lane stretches mean slow traffic sticks with you. Gas stations require a short detour off the road: fill up before leaving Boston. At night, watch for deer.
Local tip: Holiday weekends on the Pike can be genuinely brutal: outbound at the start of a long weekend, inbound at the end. Route 2 is worth the trade-off even with the slower stretches.
Take a Shuttle with Valley Transporter
Explore this option ›Take a Shuttle with Valley Transporter
Valley Transporter is a Pioneer Valley institution. Family-owned since 1986, they offer door-to-door shuttle service between Amherst, the Five College area, and all major airports.
Two options: a shared shuttle on a set schedule (starting around $65 for 1–3 passengers), or a private airport run ranging from $750 to $900 depending on passenger count.
Book as far in advance as possible. Shared slots fill fast around move-in weekends and holidays. Call 413-253-1350.

Amtrak's Vermonter line (departing Penn Station / Moynihan Train Hall in New York) stops in Northampton, about 8 miles from Amherst.
From Northampton station, take a short Uber, Lyft, or taxi into town, or catch a PVTA bus if your timing lines up.
Check Uber availability before committing to this final leg. It can be unpredictable depending on the time of year. See the seasonal availability note in the Local Services section below.
Take Amtrak to Springfield, then Connect to Amherst

From Springfield, an Uber to Amherst takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly $30 to $40. Peter Pan Bus Lines also runs from Springfield to Amherst if you want a cheaper connection.
Uber and Lyft availability in Amherst fluctuates significantly by season. More on that in the Local Services section below.
Uber or Lyft Directly from Logan
Explore this option ›Uber or Lyft Directly from Logan
Convenient but not cheap. Expect to pay around $150 or more depending on traffic, time of day, and surge pricing.
Worth it if you are traveling with a group splitting the cost, or if you want the simplest door-to-door option.
Once you arrive in Amherst, do not assume Uber will be equally easy to get. See the seasonal availability note in the Local Services section.

Read the guideFlying into Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
Newark Liberty International Airport sits in Newark, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It is worth considering if you are flying internationally or if fares from your origin city are cheaper into EWR than JFK.
It is a major hub for United Airlines with strong transatlantic and transpacific routes, and it is often less congested than JFK.
Getting to Amherst from Newark follows a similar pattern to JFK: you will need to reach Midtown Manhattan or Port Authority first, then catch a bus or train north.
Parking at Newark Airport
Newark has on-site and off-site parking across several tiers. Pre-booking online saves significantly over drive-up rates.
Pre-booking through the airport website or a third-party aggregator is strongly recommended. Visit newarkairport.com for official rates.
Amtrak from Newark Penn Station
Explore this option ›Amtrak from Newark Penn Station
The simplest ground option from Newark. Take the AirTrain from the terminal to Newark Penn Station, then board Amtrak's Vermonter north, just two legs before you are heading straight to the Pioneer Valley.
The Vermonter stops at both Springfield and Northampton, each of which requires a short Uber or taxi for the final 8 to 30 miles to Amherst. See the Amtrak entries in the Logan section above for connection details.
Book early at amtrak.com. One important caveat: the Vermonter runs once a day. If your flight lands outside that window, see the bus option below for more flexible departures throughout the day.
Bus via Port Authority (Peter Pan or Greyhound)
Explore this option ›Bus via Port Authority (Peter Pan or Greyhound)
More steps than Amtrak, but more departures throughout the day and lower fares.
From Newark Airport, take the AirTrain to Newark Penn Station, then a NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station (about 30 minutes total). From there, take the subway (the A, C, or E line from 34th Street Penn Station drops you at Port Authority in about five minutes) to Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Peter Pan Bus Lines and Greyhound both run services to Amherst from Port Authority. Peter Pan drops off at Haigis Mall on the UMass campus and at Amherst Center. Greyhound also runs a direct service to UMass Amherst.
Fares start around $32 with Greyhound and $42 to $55 with Peter Pan. Journey time from Newark to Amherst is roughly 5 to 7 hours depending on the connection.

Uber and Lyft
Both services operate in Amherst, but availability varies dramatically by season. When UMass and the Five Colleges are in session, many students drive for Uber and Lyft, so getting a ride is generally easy. When the semester ends and students leave town, the driver pool shrinks significantly and wait times can be long. If you are arriving or departing during a school break, over the summer, or late at night, do not rely on Uber or Lyft as your only option. Have a taxi number saved as a backup.
Community Ride-Shares
One of the more underrated ways to get to or from Amherst is through community ride-share groups on Facebook. These are not Uber or Lyft. They are informal arrangements where someone heading to or from the Pioneer Valley posts that they have a seat available and asks for help covering fuel costs. It is a great option for students and regulars who travel the Boston-to-Amherst corridor often. Search Facebook for Pioneer Valley and UMass Amherst ride-share groups to find active communities. This option requires advance planning and some comfort with informal arrangements, but it is often the most affordable and most sociable way to make the trip in either direction.
