When we first visited Masuda’s Café, we found the owner outside, connecting up a hose. “It’s so hot. I need to keep these plants alive,” she said. It was a Monday, and the café was closed (They open Tuesday to Sunday), but Masuda was busy making sure that everything was in place before the start of the week.
Such is the life of an entrepreneur. Sleeves rolled up and doing what it takes.
Masuda’s Café is Downtown Amherst’s new spot for breakfast, lunch, and coffee with a twist. It officially opened its doors at 17 Kellogg Ave on June 20, 2025, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was supported by the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce and the Amherst Business Improvement District (BID).
The cuisine is a blend of North American comfort dishes with some of Masuda’s favorite flavors from South Asia.
The cafe offers a welcoming space for everyone; whether you’re grabbing something quick on the go, enjoying a cozy brunch indoors, or catching up with friends on the outdoor patio. The menu features familiar favorites with global inspiration, and the coffee is roasted locally by Rao’s Coffee Roasting Company, continuing a beloved tradition at this address.
Amherst Now caught up with owner Masuda Abdullah again during her first busy weeks to ask her three quick questions as part of a new series we’re running where we introduce you to Amherst’s entrepreneurs, activists, movers, and shakers.
Q&A with Masuda Abdullah, owner of Masuda’s Cafe
What was your journey to starting a restaurant?
Coming from the vibrant and diverse city of Toronto, with a background in pastry and a passion for travel and global cuisine, I dreamed of creating a space that felt like home. I wanted to blend the warmth and hospitality of my Afghan heritage with the flavors I grew up loving and discovered during my travels.
Masuda’s Café is a reflection of that dream, a place where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy delicious food and feel truly welcome.
Why did you choose Amherst as the location for your cafe?
Amherst reminded me so much of Toronto in the best way; diverse, lively, and full of energy. The presence of students, professors, and professionals creates a dynamic and thoughtful community that I wanted to be a part of.
It felt like the perfect place to introduce a concept that bridges cultures and celebrates culinary tradition in a fresh, approachable way.
What dishes do you recommend for first-time visitors to Masuda’s?
To get the full experience, I always recommend starting with our signature drinks: Sheer Chai, Kashmiri Chai, or the Pistachio & Cardamom Latte.
For food, our South Asian Sampler Trio is a great way to try a bit of everything. The Spicy Tomato Poached Eggs and Royal Chicken Breakfast are both customer favorites, and our Paratha, which is our take on country fried dough, is a must-try.
Each dish tells a story, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
Masuda’s Café is open for breakfast and lunch, bringing a new flavor to Amherst’s vibrant dining scene. Next time you’re downtown, stop by 17 Kellogg Ave and experience it for yourself.
