A talk, “Oil on Canvas and ‘Canvas’ in Oil: Finances and Fabrics in the History of Art,” will be given by Professor Walter Denny on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The event will be held in Pruyne Lecture Hall, Fayerweather Hall, at Amherst College.
The lecture will explore the roles of textiles as drivers of the artistic economy, as independent art forms, and as sources of imagery in art history.
The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
Walter B. Denny is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the History of Art and Architecture at UMass Amherst, specializing in Islamic art. He served as a Senior Consultant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department of Islamic Art and has published extensively on Islamic carpets, textiles, and cultural exchange.
