PFD law in Massachusetts

Mandatory PFD Wear for Canoes/Kayaks – September 15 to May 15

Massachusetts law requires all canoe and kayak occupants to wear a USCG-approved Type I–III PFD at all times from September 15, 2025 to May 15, 2026. This rule, enforced by the Massachusetts Environmental Police, addresses cold-water hypothermia risks during cooler months.

  • A personal flotation device (PFD) must be worn (not just accessible)
  • Applies to all recreational paddlers
  • Designed to increase survival time during emergencies

Ensure compliance before paddling. For enforcement questions, contact the Massachusetts Environmental Police at (800) 632-8075.
