El Salvador, Mexico & lots of yellow at El Comalito this summer

Tiny Bee Asiatic lilies outside El Comalito in South Amherst.

This compact Asiatic hybrid, Lilium ‘Tiny Bee’, produces bright yellow, spotted, upright blooms about a foot tall. It is prized for early, long-lasting flowering, container suitability, and ease of care, thriving in USDA zones 3–9.

These dwarf lilies typically bloom midsummer (June–July) and are known to support pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. Their vibrant yellow flowers, echoed by the yellow and purple bench behind them, add a striking and cheerful touch to the outdoor seating, used by many clients while waiting for a spot to open up in the restaurant.

El Comalito, a family-owned Salvadoran-Mexican restaurant at 460 West St, has been part of the community for over ten years.

On the Mexican side, you’ll find burritos, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas (many gluten‑free options), fajitas, tortas, and more, often accompanied by rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, and your choice of mild, hot, or green salsa.

The restaurant also offers appetizers like yuca, spicy tamales, and both beef and chicken empanadas , plus a full bar featuring craft margaritas, including fruit flavors like passion fruit, pineapple, and hibiscus—and Mexican Coca‑Cola with cane sugar.

Locals appreciate the generous portions, casual colorful dining area, and warm hospitality. Reviews often highlight items like birria tacos, mole chicken, BBQ chicken burritos, fries with plantains and sour cream, and churros.
