In recent years, Amherst has created an alternative to traditional policing. The Community Responders for Equity, Safety & Service (CRESS) program was established following recommendations from the Community Safety Working Group in 2021. CRESS is an unarmed, civilian responder program that focuses on non-violent calls such as mental health concerns, wellness checks, and housing-related issues.
CRESS operates separately from the police department, but shares coordination through Amherst’s central dispatch system. CRESS responders are available for some 911 calls during weekday and Saturday hours.
