The Petunias of Amherst

Petunias in South Amherst this morning.

Another reason why this is one of our favorite times of the year! Splashes of color everywhere.

Petunias are cheerful flowers, known for their trumpet-shaped blossoms and variety of hues. They are a favorite among gardeners in Amherst and Western MA.

Garden shops like Andrew’s Greenhouse on South East Street, offer a wide selection of annuals, including petunias, grown in their eleven greenhouses. Andrew’s lists over 20 different types of Petunias on their website.

Petunias thrive in the climate here, blooming from late spring through early fall.

Other Local nurseries like Amherst Nurseries and Sugarloaf Gardens in nearby Sunderland also provide a variety of petunias and gardening advice.

Want to complete the circle and geek out on this? The University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment offers resources on plant care, including information on common pests like thrips that can affect petunias.
