At the Amherst Area Chamber’s legislative breakfast at the Inn on Boltwood (Oct 31, 2025), regional lawmakers traced a clear through-line: small-business viability in Western Massachusetts depends on predictable policy, affordable energy, more housing across the income spectrum, modern transportation that fits the region (rail and bus), and a steadier federal partner.

They highlighted near-term moves; scrutiny of winter electric rates, a statewide energy-affordability bill, municipal streamlining, and bond bills for higher education and climate resilience, while asking local leaders to prioritize “the most important dollar” as nonprofits and food systems face deep federal cuts.

As SNAP benefits come to an end, lawmakers also called on everyone to do their part in responding to the looming food crisis.

Donations, volunteering, and community partnerships are some of the actions that were suggested to help stabilize programs that keep kids, seniors, and working families fed so short-term gaps don’t turn into long-term harm.

The morning opened with Polina Potochevska, Marketing & Events Coordinator for the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce, welcoming guests to the event. Jacob Robinson, Executive Director of the Chamber, served as moderator, guiding a wide-ranging discussion.

Arthur Haskins, Chamber board member and chair of the Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPA) Committee, emphasized the need for everyone, businesses, nonprofits, and government, to work together during these trying economic times.
