Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell reminds consumers that state law requires most gift certificates and gift cards to be redeemable for at least seven years from the date of purchase. Activation or maintenance fees on these cards are generally prohibited. Consumers also have the right to request cash back when a card’s remaining balance is less than five dollars. Promotional or rebate cards may be subject to different rules.
