Reading Frederick Douglass Together in Amherst

Community Reading of “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

South Congregational Church, in partnership with the Amherst DEI Department and Jones Library, will host “Reading Frederick Douglass Together” on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 3:00 PM at 1066 South East Street, Amherst. Community members of all ages are invited to read a paragraph from Douglass’s historic 1852 speech. Portions will be read in Spanish and other languages if readers are available.

Gospel Choir, Panel Discussion, Free Books & Refreshments

The event will also feature a performance by the Amherst Area Gospel Choir, a panel discussion with youth, mid-career, and elder voices, free books, and refreshments. The program is supported by a grant from Mass Humanities.
