Exhibition: Kwame Brathwaite: Revolutionary Movements at Mead Art Museum

The exhibition “Kwame Brathwaite: Revolutionary Movements” will be on view from February 17 through July 5, 2026, at the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College. The exhibition explores movement in Brathwaite’s photography, from his documentation of social and political movements to his portraits capturing the body in motion. It features his work celebrating Black beauty, fashion, music, and athletics, including images of Muhammad Ali and historic marches. The exhibition is curated in partnership with the artist’s family.

Kwame Brathwaite (1938-2023) was a photojournalist and activist whose work helped popularize the “Black is Beautiful” movement. He co-founded the Grandassa Models and documented cultural and political life for decades.
