Big Night Amphibian Migrations: Henry Street Closures Possible

The Town of Amherst and the Hitchcock Center for the Environment are preparing for the annual “Big Night” amphibian migrations. Portions of Henry Street may be temporarily closed to through traffic on anticipated migration nights (when temperatures exceed 40°F and rain is forecast) to protect salamanders and frogs crossing to vernal pools. Migrations could occur on multiple nights from mid-March through early April 2026.

Volunteer Information:

  • Do not park on Henry Street.
  • Use designated parking at the Cushman Market lot, the lot opposite Cushman Market, or the Cushman Scott Children’s Center on Henry Street.
  • Carpooling is encouraged.

For real-time updates on closures and migration activity, visit the Hitchcock Center website, join the Facebook group, or call the Hitchcock Visitor Center at 413-256-6006 for recorded updates.
