Following the creation of the Continental Army in 1775, Springfield, Massachusetts became a key supply point for the American military. On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 6 PM, Springfield Armory National Historic Site curator Alex MacKenzie will give a public talk at South Hadley Public Library, 2 Canal Street, about why Springfield was selected as the site of the first national armory and how the Continental Arsenal supported the fight for independence. The program is open to residents and visitors interested in local and national history.
Alex MacKenzie oversees collections at Springfield Armory National Historic Site and has written and presented widely on the history of American arms manufacturing and the Armory’s role in the American Revolution.
