The Slavery North initiative will host a lecture by Visiting Research Professor Jennifer DeClue on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, from 3:00-4:00 PM in the E501 Tower Room of South College at UMass Amherst. The event is free and open to the public, with a virtual attendance option via Zoom.
DeClue’s talk, titled “‘A Very Likely Negro Girl’: Finding Us in the Archives of Northern Slavery,” will examine archival records documenting enslaved Black women and girls in New England. The lecture is part of Slavery North’s 2025 Fellow Talk series.

Jennifer DeClue is Associate Professor in the Program for the Study of Women and Gender at Smith College. A scholar of Black feminism and slavery studies, she is the author of Visitation: The Conjure Work of Black Feminist Avant-Garde Cinema (Duke UP, 2022). Her current research focuses on Black women enslaved in New England.
