The UMass/Five College Graduate Program in History presents its 2025 Distinguished Annual Lecture, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Dr. Alan Taylor, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 6:00–7:30 PM at the Commonwealth Honors College Events Hall (157 Commonwealth Ave., Amherst).
Lecture Title: “American Civil Wars: Canadian Dimensions”
Dr. Taylor will explore how the U.S. Civil War shaped Canada’s confederation amid tensions with Irish radicals and French-English divisions.

Dr. Alan Taylor, Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, is the 2025 Writer-in-Residence for UMass/Five College History. His 11 books, including American Civil Wars, redefine transnational North American history.
