Odyssey Bookshop will host an author event with novelist and filmmaker John Sayles on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 7 PM at 9 College Street in South Hadley. Sayles will present his new historical novel Crucible and will be joined in conversation by Jill Kaufman. The event is free and open to the public.
Crucible is a sweeping novel centered on Henry Ford and the social and labor conflicts surrounding Detroit from the 1920s through World War II. The story explores class tensions, union struggles, Ford’s private security force, and the rise of industrial power in America. The novel features a wide cast of characters drawn from workers, journalists, organizers, and public figures, reflecting the social upheavals of the era.
John Sayles is an independent filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and novelist. He has been nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and once for the National Book Award. Jill Kaufman is a reporter and host at NEPM and a longtime public radio journalist with experience at PRX, WBUR, and NHPR.
