Commemorative Event at Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum – Free Admission
The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum (130 River Drive, Hadley) presents “Stories of Slavery and Freedom,” a Reading Frederick Douglass Together event, on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Sunken Garden. The program honors six enslaved African Americans: Zebulon Prutt, Sezor Phelps, Margaret (Peg) Bowen, and her daughters/granddaughters Rosanna, Phillis, and Phillis. Featuring emcee Anika Lopes (Ancestral Bridges), music by Jackie Wallace and the Amherst Gospel Choir, and dramatic readings by Dr. Ousmane Power-Green and Olivia Haynes, followed by a communal reading of Frederick Douglass’s “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
