Award-winning writer Jonah Knight will present a 60-minute interactive storytelling magic show, “Magical Winter Lights: From Fire Festivals to Electronic Illuminations,” at the Town Hall Auditorium in Belchertown on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 6 PM. The program is hosted by Clapp Memorial Library and follows the Belchertown Cultural Council’s Winter Light Night. Families and community members are welcome; the event is free to attend.
The show explores how winter holiday lights developed from early fire festivals to lanterns, candles, and modern electronic displays. Topics include Viking fire festivals, lights in Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas, the electronic lights of Eid al-Fitr and Japanese Winter Illuminations, Yule logs, butter candles and diya lamps, and lantern traditions such as St. Martin’s Day and Yi Peng. Funding is provided by the Friends of the Clapp Memorial Library and the Belchertown Community Alliance.
